Every day for months, at the same window was the white haired kid, feeding that bird. Ed had never really noticed him before that, but he stuck out a bit cooing over a tiny gold finch every morning - white hair, one long scar down his face and standing, for the most part alone. Edward really wouldn't have even noticed him except that a small crowd had gathered one day while he was trying to get by, and the boy was there every day after that, doing the same thing. Even if he was doing it alone, now.
He waited for the finch to fly off again before approaching. Taking note of the kid's disheveled look and hoping he hadn't realized Ed had been watching him for a bit. Although curiosity was in his nature and there wasn't much going on at this time of the morning, he didn't want to seem like he had nothing better to do than watch some kid feed a bird. Offering the kid a friendly smile, he kept his tone casual - one hand holding the strap of the bag he kept his books in, the other jammed deep into a pocket. "They let you keep a bird here?"

For a moment, Allen had thought one of them had come back, but this one was new. Prompted to offer his gloved hand in greeting, he pushes away from the window with a renewal of his smile. "Where are my manners? I haven't even asked your name."

Date: 2011-05-04 02:00 pm (UTC)At the mention of the group before Ed didn't respond right away, the fact that this kid could identify that catching his interest more than anything else - that was some attention to detail. He shrugged, a gesture meant to look more carefree than anything, "I don't really do crowds."
It was the last part that made him pause though. Ed was lacking in manners enough that a handshake could be bypassed without drawing any attention, usually. Or maybe most the people he met over the years just weren't the handshaking type. Either way this was too direct to exactly avoid, and the hesitance in his reaction practically hung in the air between them before he moved.
Returning the smile, Ed shifted the bag on his shoulder - his own gloved hand still mostly hidden beneath the strap with the underhanded way he supported it there - before drawing the other from his pocket to return the gesture.
Edward met everything head-on so he gave the kid a firm handshake, as if there had been no reason at all for the hesitance in his actions. The smile never wavered while he carefully watched Allen for any response to the artificial appendage concealed by another glove. As he shook his hand, Ed answered the other boy casually enough, "Edward Elric. I don't think I got your name..."
[It would help if I sent the appropriately edited one....]
